Fences and outdoor furniture require painting with something that won't peel from exposure to the elements. Mrs. Greenthumb offers this recipe for homemade stain:
One part oil-based paint (in your choice of color)
One part turpentine
One part linseed oil
Mix together and apply with a brush. It will look like a stain. Wait 6 months and then apply a second coat, and the paint will never peel.
